My favorite load is 42 gr. of FFFg and a 455 gr. Minie-Hunter bullet.

Pardon my ignorance , but where does one get the mold for the minnie hunter or purchase the bullets? I haven't seen either before.

I should have been more specific..... I have been trying to get a lyman 575213PH to shoot well and I can't seem to. Have tried charges from 40 -60 FFg and fired it "unsized" (though run through a 577 die to take off the excess lube) as well as sized to 575. My understanding is that the 1-48 twist should stabilize the longer bullet with a centre of gravity that is slightly farther back due to its shallow cavity. The skirt is fairly thin as compared to an OS mold I have and am wondering if it can only handle a lighter load?

Thanks,
Rob

Hate to ask the obvious, but have you slugged or gauged the bore? Is the bullet JUST .001 undersize? Is the lead pure? Just thinking out loud.

Lead pure, Barrel not slugged. Guess I should do this.....

In my first-generation P-H Navy 2-bander with that twist, circa 1975-to-1981, I shot 40 gr 3F DuPont (Goex) using a Lyman 580213 NS bullet ... with the bullet sized to 0.5795" for a 0.580" barrel. That last part was critical for accuracy ... keep the bullet diameter CLOSE to the bore diameter. Lube was simple 3 tallow:1beeswax, and I used a base-dab of Crisco ... loading was no problem through a Skirmish. I copied that load from the other folks that were also learning to use that new rifle in 1975 ... it worked, so I never experimented with any other loads.

Dave,
Saw this post from last year. Where do you get a sizer that sizes to .5795? All I have seen are in .001 steps. Working up a new load for a .581 barrel and need a new sizer.

I have one of the Lyman P-H molds sold with the rifles originally new in the box unused, it always shot for me in my 2 band. $75.00 plus some shipping.

Hi Ken,
After reading my own post I realize I was not clear. Actually I am looking to see if sizers in .0005 incriments are available. I am working up a load for a .581 barrel. Will use a .580 sizer but if that doesn't work I'd like to try a .5805. Will keep you in mind though.

Bub,

There are a number of places to buy Moulds. Midsouth Shooter's Supply, Natchez Shooter's Supply, Midway, Dixie, Lodgewood Mfg., etc. Any good N-SSA sutler usually can help you.

I would suggest a trip to Lodgewood in Whitewater Wisconsin. They can slug your bore and help you with sizers and everything. Be sure to call before you go because they do travel quite a bit to various shoots, shows and re-enactments.

Hi Ed,
I do need a mold, as well as a sizer. Had my barrel slugged, it is .581. Had been sizing to .579 but .002 under didn't work. Got 3.5 to 4.5" groups at 100 yds. Rounds cast .579 - .580. Unsized I get 2 to 3.5 groups at 100 yds. Looking for a Lyman 580213 mold (.590 -510Gr). Am told it casts a little over .580 and could be sized to .580. Have checked all the places you mentioned, except Lodgewood. I have bought several items from them, both at the nationals and on-line. Thanks for the reminder. Lyman does not make that mold any more so will call Lodgewood today and see if they have a used one. If you know of a Lyman 580213, or similar thin walled .580 (a .581 would be better) minnie for sale , please let me know. Currently using a Rapine 580460 (.580 - 460 Gr) but it is not working in my .581 barrel.

Thanks again

Another good source for moulds is NEI Hand Tools. They have a 580 mould that is very similar to the Lyman Mould you are looking for. Go to:

www.neihandtools.com (http://www.neihandtools.com)

They can even make one larger for you if you need it.

Thanks Ed,

Great site. Just read mold data briefly and looked at prices. Seems like he sells a quality product for the money. I'll look into it but may wait to see if I can get a used Lyman before next season. If not, NEI has a new customer.

I have found that the Lyman P-H bullets shoot the best with only 35.7 grains of goex 3f. I know this sounds light but it is more than enough for 100 and 50 yd. work. I have a PH enfield 2 band and a harper ferry musket and this is the most accurate load for both. Try it you might like it. I use lens lube.
