Does anyone know who manufactured Zouaves with lockplates that were stamped
Remington 1863 below the eagle?

Thanks,

Duane

With all due respect to my long time friend Chris Sweeney, the ones I had seen in the early 1960's were all made by Antonio Zoli. Yes, there were legal issues with the real Remington company. The remaining arms that were in production, and those that had not yet been shipped all had the word "Remington" on the lock plate stamped out by a series of X's, like this: XXXXXXXXX. A close friend still has one of the early examples that has had the lock plate stamped out.

I bought a Hy-Hunter new by mail order in June 1963 ($49.95) and it did not have any evidence of the word "Remington" on the lock plate.

I must have looked at 100 pics of Zouaves from various manufacturers and have yet to see another lockplate so marked. Maybe someone did it after buying the rifle.

My father started skirmishing with the 1st NY dragoons in 1961 or 1962. His first musket was a used Hy-Hunter, which would put it's manufacture somewhere prior to 1962 (serial # is 2xxx). It came with a Remington-marked lockplate. Since the # inside the lock matches the # on the barrel I assume they are a set.

Hence, with all deference due our esteemed master-SAC'er: So there! :-)

Dave - Actually, the original Remington Rifles had the date 1863 stamped on the tail of the lock.

Original Zouaves plates had U.S. below the eagle and to the right: REMINGTON'S
ILION, N.Y.
1863 was stamped horizontally on the tail. But you probably already knew that. The lockplate on the repro rifle I'm refering to has REMINGTON 1863 stamped below the eagle. No U.S. stamp.

I have one marked Remington but it also has 1863 stamped to the left of the hammer lika a Springfield. I've also seen one marked Remington and 1860 stamped left of hammer.
The1863 gun appeared to be a factory job as it was nicely done. The 1860 could have come with just Remington on it and the 1860 added.
Both were Zoli's

I found two of these Zouaves online one had a Whitacre barrel and the other had no barrel at all. Not much help at all I know. Here are some pictures that might help though.

Sorry, It is not a Whitaker made barrel. I should have said Whitaker Marked barrel, photo 14 is his logo so I'm assuming he relined it.

I'm a bit curious about the barrel. It has a seperate breech section. The repro Zouaves I've seen don't seem to have that. Dan did a flint 1816 barrel for me and breeched it the same way. Does he put his stamp only on relined barrels? My 1816 doesn't have one.

Duane,

Your barrel(s) may have patented breeches which do look different than those with the standard breech plug.
