So I have been told that the Lyman 575213PH is the bullet to use in the 1:48 twist 1858 Enfield rifles.

Problem is, my Pedersoli needs to be sized to .578, and the 575213PH doesn't drop that big.

Is there some other mold of a similar bullet in the correct size?

Thanks,

Steve

Try running the lead and mold hotter. Also you can try a batch adding tin such as solder to help fill out the mold without adding significantly to hardness. If that fails try this: http://www.castpics.net/subsite2/MoldMods/BDE.pdf. I've never tried it with minies but it works with other molds I've tried it on I've been able to gain .001-.003" on bullets.

I've done beagling before, but of course it only changes the size in one direction - the bullet is still undersize along the parting line of the mold.

I've been casting bullets with wheel weight lead and then putting a screw in them and spinning them in the mold with valve lapping compound, but it is slow going opening up the size.

If you're lucky you could try and find an old Lyman .580213 New Style or Lyman .580585 New Style but these moulds are pretty rare. We use both .580213s and .585213s and these are awesome moulds bjut hard to find. Wish Lyman would make some of their old moulds again.

Steve, like Paul said about running your mold hot, my PH mold throws right at .577". Dog gone, thats just frog's hair under what you need! I have a Lee original .575"/ 500 gr. minie mold that run hot will throw a .578" minie. I find this bullet shoots right along with the PH minie in my rifle as to groups, I just never posted it on this board.

I have to run my lead and mold really hot to get good minies. Paul is one of the experienced vets of this sport and has good advice! (Just said that so his guys will give him the razz, but it's true!);)

I have a very old one. I don't know what it throws. There is a guy in New Hampshire who worked for Lyman and has thousands of moulds for sale and I'll try to dig his number up.

Steve,
I have .578 and .580 molds in the original style minie. They are very near the same as the 575213. The molds are $175 with handles, not including shipping. They are double cavity captive core.

If I can answer any additional questions, lae me know.

Thanks
