Hello, i'm new to this forum but I hope someone can help me regarding a vintage musket. My dad bought a 1861 springfield musket for me at an auction in Plain City, Ohio about 40 years ago. On the barrel, on the side opposite the lock, is stamped " 6TH VA LT INF".Would anyone know about the 6th Virginia light infantry and be able to point me to information about the unit and, maybe, information about this musket? My son is now (like I was once) very interested in this weapon, the Civil War and a little history lesson would be great for both of us.Thank you.

Welcome to the N-SSA BB.

If you can post some pictures of your musket, there are many shooters on our board who are very well versed in historical weapons. Pictures always elicit opinions and in many cases you will walk away better informed. As far as learning anything specific about your musket and its relationship to the unit markings, you may not be able to learn much...61 muskets were not serialized, yet many have "rack stamps" on the butt plates at the top, which might indicate its presence in a state armory or militia. Whatever you are able to find out, it will be a priceless lesson in history for your son. Sounds like to have taken care of the old girl. Whatever you do, don't clean it. If she hasn't had a bath in 150 years, she doesn't need one now :)

We look forward to seeing your musket if you can take some photos.
