Can a sharps bullet be used safely and accurately in the Model 41 rifle. My bore is a small one at .535. It is hard to find good .54 cal bullets or molds that small or close to that size and not have to try and size it down 5 times.

Hi ,

First an answer to you your question, No, that is not a good substitute.

I think if you approach either Dr. Moose, or Tennessee Moulds I think they can help you.

You need to find a old lyman .533476 minnieball mould if you can. They come available on Ebay every now and then or somebody on the this board might have one for sale. Most throw a .535 size bullet. I have a Bill Large barrel with a .533 bore and I size them to .532 on my Mississippi. If you cannot find one then Moose or Tennesse Moulds like Mr. Haun suggested should be able to help you. Rich

Richthe .533476 is what I shoot in my Lorenz. bore size is .535. the other mold I have is the Rapine 533400. both are 400 grain bullets. I run them through a lubrisizer .533 die.

If you're not going to skirmish with it, why dont you go with a patched round ball, like the original .54cals.?
a .526 ball and .015 patch may do nicely.

I already use a .520 round ball in a rag vellum cartridge. I have several .58 cal muskets that I use minie balls with and like shooting minies. Plus making up cartridges for the minies is faster. I already have a .54 cal minie mold but it throws a .545 and that is way to big to size down the minie to my model 41. I shoot competitively out where I live so I want to see how accurate I can get the old girl. There are other shooting leagues than N-SSA skirmishing. My old civil war group recreates your skirmishing rules letter by letter, so we know how the game works, we just live 17 hours west of you.

jerk, Sounds like you already had all the answers. So why did you ask such a stupid question" I know, "There's no such thing as a 'stupid' question. Foolish then? The answer, in a nutshell: Safe? Possibly. Accurate? Impossible without the hollow base of a Minie.

Now safely is the question. You can load the Sharps bullet like loading a Enfield Whitworth. Try it and let us know the results. Anything is possible. Rich

Why don't you try a Wilkinson bullet? I shoot a .54 Wilkinson in my Mississippi. Moose makes moulds in .538 and .542. With 40 grains of 3F, my Mississippi shoots 1 1/2" five shot groups from the bench at 50 yards.
