I have a Starr Carbine I want to start making bullets for but have not been able to determine the proper mold to get or have made. I have looked at my Sharps Ringtails made in a Lyman 557489 mold but being the christmas tree shape only the last ring contacts the bore and with that ring remove it drops right down the barrel. Looking at picking up a few Enfield .566 x .904 470 gr to try but any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
T

The Lyman 557489 ought to do it. The original bullets were similar to the Christmas tree-type, but with one step instead of two. The two diameters were about .560 and .540.

Attached are pictures of two original Starr carbine bullets. The bullet on the left measures .560" at the bottom ring and the bullet on the right measures .555" at the bottom ring.

I have a Lyman 557489 but only the final ring makes contact and if your remove the final ring the bullet just drops through the barrel. When I've tried shooting them the bullet comes out but you have no idea where it will hit as it's not supported enough as it travels down the barrel.

That helps narrow it down a bit, slugging the barrel was .545 - .548 - Thanks

Tried a few .547 which was close to the slugged barrel size and .556 (Burnside bullet) niether would hold a group
.547 keyholed and .556 was all over the target at 50 yards.

Anyone else shooting a Starr that has any info it would be greatly appreciated.

In most post that had the two pictures of original Starr bullets, the bullet on the left was .560" at the bottom (and only ring). Maybe the round you need should be around .560". Just a thought. Try slugging a .560" round ball through the barrel and see how it looks.

Are you using Hollow Base bullets? Thats what they originally were. They were expanded at the bottom of the ring.

The Starr bullet did not have a hollow base as we use the term. It was a pressed in cone "dimple" in the base of the bullet. The cone "dimple" is .137" deep and is .262" wide. 1742
