Left or right handed weapon?

All 1853 Enfield muskets can be fired either left hand or right hand. But they were designed for right handed shooters. All soldiers of the ACW were taught to shoot right handed.

I Insist on a left handed weapon. If I cannot purchase it I will manufacture it.

What would you want it for? If you want a Civil War arm, it's not authentic. If you want a long-rang target rifle, there are better options - I'd talk to Lee Shaver about a dedicated long-range rifle.

The Whitworth would be good at the NSSA 200 yd matches. At that range the bullet would have stopped yawing and would be a good choice. I have personally seen the Whitworth hold it's own at the 1000 yd. matches by men who understand how to get the best out of the gun. There are other rifles which are easier to shoot well at 1000 to 1500 Yd, but are not as much fun IMHO. Lee is a great source if info, and equipment and a very nice guy, but don't sell the Whitworth short. With a lot of load development and patience it is a fine firearm.

My shooting buddy and I had a chance to use our long range muzzleloaders (his is a PH Whitworth, mine was a Euroarms Volunteer) at 500 meters shooting at rams on a black powder cartridge silhouette range in Ithaca, Michigan.

We found that it wasn't really necessary to use that hexagonal swage to get great accuracy out of the Whitworth. With a 1:20 twist, a 500 grain bullet sized to .450/.451 and a decent charge of Swiss 3fg, we both held great groups (2 moa sometimes) on those steel knockdown targets.

Unfortunately, they stopped holding N-SSA long range matches in the NWT so I sold mine. That's going to be another one of those guns I wish I had never sold, but oh, well.

What N-SSA 200 yard matches ?

Just curious whether any of you gents had seen the article below. Nice article on the early Whitworth 52-bore rifles though it doesn't mention anything about the larger 26-bore rifles.
