I use either Crisco or Bore butter.

The lighter/thinner the lube you use, the less there is after sucessive shots. It blows away from the chamber blast. While you don't need a great deal of it I would suggest using your regular lube thinned out a bit so you can use a stick/applicator to smear it on.

Powder, two Wonder Wads, and the ball. Why waste your time with lube? The guys who did it for real in the War didn't. After a hundred or more rounds in practice the bore looks clean with two dry patches, since the Wonder Wads both lube and scrub the bore well. And, it's a very accurate load with the right powder charge and right sized ball.

Wonder Wads, $8.25 per 100 for 45 cal .060 thick.
A bag of 1,000 Walters Vegetable fiber 45 cal wads ( available from Midway ) .060 thick, $20.
One 5 oz tube T/C Bore Butter, $8.00.
Put the wads in a pan and squirt the whole tube of T/C Bore Butter in.
I set the pan over a kerosene space heater and let it melt and soak in.
Stir occasionally and in about 15 minutes I have 1,000 lubed wads for $28.00 instead of $82.50 .
Just a thought.

I've always used Len's Lube. Seems to work well. Cheap and easy.

A reminder to those who compete in the N-SSA Revolver Matches:

25.6 LOADING REVOLVERS (added 01/05)
A revolver cylinder may be loaded in place, or may be removed and loaded in a loading
device. Filler or wads may be used in the chambers, and all chambers must be greased.

Thanks John! I think I might try beeswax and olive oil, 1-2.

Emmert's formula (70%crisco, 20%bee wax and 10% olive oil and wintergreen for the smell ) works fine , cylinder axis lubricated with Emmert can shot several times without troubles .

Merry Christmas All,
Does anyone know what are the wonder wads and other wadding made from?
Any ideas for bulk material to use? I have punches and if I can find the material, no
reason I can't make own..
Cheers.. Joe 15th CVI

A greased wad atop the powder and under the ball doth qualify?

While I've only shot my revolver in the N-SSA matches once, I have been shooting it for fun for years; and with so many other things, there is no one simple answer.

In cold weather, I use crisco. Winter up through say 50 degrees.

In warm weather up to 80 degrees I use 2:1 crisco to beeswax.

In weather above 80 degrees I use 50/50 crisco/beeswax.

This prevents blow out of lube.

I've also done pretty well in all temps with just greasing with lithium grease.

Generally what I do with my muskets as well, though with all of the above, exact proportions aren't needed, so long as it works for you.

Finally: I've tried using bore butter below freezing. Does NOT work. Hard as a rock.
