I just found a 5th model Burnside carbine, serial number 11, 883. Is there a way to tell where it was issued?

Thanks,

Hugh

Some of the regiments that were issued Burnside carbines were: 1st New Jersey, 1st Michigan, 3rd Indiana, 5th, 6th and 7th Ohio, 3rd West Virgina, 13th, 14th and 18th Pennsylvania, 14th and 21st New York Verteran Cavalry, 2nd, 12th, 14th and 16th Illinois. From the book "Civil War Guns", by William B. Edwards, on page 118, appears the following, "The saga of Burnside was at an end. Most of the Fourth Model guns were of the sub-type with stud screws in a frame box we have called a "Fifth" model." "The final contract for 3,000 Burnside carbines was negotiated 6 July 1864, by Hartshorn..." (page 118).

Thanks for the information. Is there any way to tell which regiment used this particular carbine? Also, do you know what the gas seal in the main block is made from? Mine is a silver color and does not look like brass.

Thanks again,

Hugh

There are records maintained at The National Archives in Adelphi, MD that can help identify a particular model/serial number to a particular unit. I have a Forth Model Burnside that was issued to PA Cav, I don\'t remember which one and the tag is downstairs, but anyway, it can be done.
If I recall it took me all day about 10 years ago to find this info.

The "silver colored thing" is made out of Platinum to prevent gas erosion.
