I've an original M.1860 .56-56 Spencer carbine. It's been refinished and has a new Hoyt liner. It's function is problematical and chambering all but new Starline brass all but impossible. Is there a Spencer gunsmith out there anyone can recommend? Thanks.

Larry Romano has reworked many Spencers. Give Larry a call at 315-695-2066 he will be able to advise you on what needs to be done.

In my experience cartridge configuration is super(hyper) critical. If you have the centerfire conversion block you must be sure to use flat nosed bullets. The length of the cartridge must match the originals. I use a Lyman .50 70 govt reloading press and the reloads always chamber slick as snot (I also have a Hoyt liner). Bottom line I think your problem is with your cartridges and you do not need a gunsmith.

Always trying to keep things as simple as I can Dave I should mention that the RCBS 56-50 Spencer dies will squeeze the case down even skinnier than the Lyman 50-70 (bought in the early days before a Spencer die set was available). BUT if you kept the gun in .56 cal you may have a little trouble squeezing the bullet into the case. I went to the .50 liner and my oversized .50 bullets fit the RCBS sized cases perfectly.

Hey...Jim, "#7786 (with the coveted v still not awarded)", why no "V"? Did you drop out for a large number of years?

Yo John - just trying to jerk the feerless leaders around a little on the Iredell Blues. I was in the 20th GA for about ten, then the 44th GA for three or four, then gone for a few building this log house on the mountain, then with the Blues for the last three or four. Would take a lot of research to determine the "v" and if I get it I lose the opportunity to try to make people feel guilty.

Egg - I get it....There for a minute I thought maybe your Adjutant just plain didn't like you, because he/she is the one that tells the Exec. Sec. to add the "Coveted V" after your number!
