I have picked up a couple of original Springfield bayonets over the years. One of them is supposed to be an 1855. However, I'm not sure of the difference between a '55 and an 1861 bayonet. I haven't been able to find a decent Internet link that shows details of the two. One of these bayonets has an original scabbard as well, in so-so condition.
I'll be offering these pig stickers for sale soon. All help/leads will be appreciated.

Gil,
The bayonet is known as a M-1855-1870 and didn't really change. In fact, there were so many of them when the U.S. adopted the M-1873 Trapdoor Rifle that the Springfield Armory actually swaged the sockets down to fit the new model rifle! Later on, after the Armory ran out of the M-1855-1870 bayonets, they began making new socket bayonets for the Trapdoors.
