Amoskeag?

"Amoskeag" appears on the lock of many Colts M1861 rifle-muskets. I have become curious about it.

1. Was that the name of a town or armory/factory?

2. Does it still exsist under that name?

3. Where is/was it?

There are Special Model Muskets ...... I am sure these are what you refer to. There are 3 different manufacturers L G & Y, Amoskeag and Colt. All look the same except with minor marking differences. The actual model designation of these have got really mixed up with all of the advertisements thanks to the repro. market. They were all built in the northeast during the war.
