I have an opportunity to by this musket. I think it is an 1816 conversion. What do you guys think?

Quite decent M.1816/22 with a standard U.S. arsenal 1850s cone-in-barrel percussion conversion. Ramrod is a replacement, perhaps from an M.1842. These percussioned muskets bore much of the brunt of combat well into 1862. They were withdrawn from front line service as soon as possible by both sides, as I understand it, as this Belgian-style conversion proved prone to failure. The proper bayonet is easily acquired, but sometimes requires hand fitting.

We have not yet settled on a price but, you cant quite see the eagle head or the proof mark, and no ther marks are visable on the top of the breach area. There is a small S on the side plate but no other markings on the stock. The lock is marked Spring Field 1838. The bore looks pretty good with some light rust, and there are no markings on the butt plate, the front stock swivel is missing. I assume the correct ram rod is the button head type?
All in all it speaks to me, hope I can make a deal. Thanks for the info.

The condition of the nipple threads is critical. Bob Hoyt tells me that it is very difficult or impossible to safely repair corrosion caused metal loss or inserting a helicoil on cone conversions can not be safely done. If it is cheap enough you could get a Hoyt barrel, rear sight and hammer and turn it into an H&P Conversion.
