I have an original '42 cut back to musketoon length(26"). I was thinking of sending the barrel to Bob Hoyt to be relined and rifled. Given the short length, would I be better of with a faster twist than for a 42" tube? How about number of grooves? I plan on using the Rapine semi wadcutter minie.

Thanks in advance,

Duane

You should call Bobby Hoyt and ask him. He knows....717-642-6696
I assume you're talking about a .69 cal.and I don't know why you'd rifle it.

You could make that into the short rifled Fremont version of the 1842. Other than that, if you plan on rifling it, it will have to be full length for the Rifled-musket version of the 1842.

I think he just wants something to shoot a deer with. The gun laws in NJ are strange.

I don't know what it would have to do with gun laws here, but I did think it would make a nice short range deer gun. I'm not looking for an N-SSA
approved gun. I already have an full length original rifled '42. This would be something to fool around with. I did speak to Bobby yesterday and we kicked around the subject of twist and number of grooves. I told him I'd let him know when I send the barrel out to him, in the mean time I thought I'd fish for some opinions on it. I may decide to go the Fremont
route and let him stretch it to 33", in which case I'd probably go with the original type twist and grooves.

It's tough to beat that original rifling configuration, no matter how long (or short) the barrel. Should make a great woods-range Bambi-buster!

I have a new 33" Fremont barrel from Armi-Sport with the front band W/sight if you're interested. 125.00. jmsbrake@yahoo.com

My understanding is that an Armi barrel wil not fit in an original stock. Can anyone weigh in on that?

I fit an Armi-Sport smoothbore barrel to my original stock with some minor rework to stock breach area. Had to remove wood for the bedding anyway. Otherwise, it dropped right in with good hammer alignment. Not sure about the Freemont though.
Hope this helps,
Gary B.
