I bought one of those "sergeant's tools" but it rubs against the back of the "snail" when I use it to remove or install the nipple.

Do you guys know of better fitting ones?

I use a 1/4" open end wrench.

I use an original 1863 open end cone wrench with 2 screw driver blades.

1/4" drive socket turned upside down with an allen wrench to turn it. Best nipple wrench ever. I always had problems with rounding off nipples in my musket but this solved that issue. Even works on those pesky 1855 Springfields with the high hump Maynard tape primer.

We, at least the ones I know, don't buy anything if they can make it themselves.

I took a 1/4" drive extension, 6" or longer, and bent it at a 90 degree angle about 1" up from the
female end. I used a MAPP gas torch and bent it in my vise when it got bright red. That worked great
but I always thought I'd like to have another female end on the long side. I found an 8 point 1/4" drive x 1/4"
socket in my tool box. I use the solid end where I need the leverage to break the nipple free and
then use the socket end to spin it out quickly.

One day, I'll permanently solder the socket on the long end.

Thanks for the link, Charlie! I like to keep a bookmark folder of good contacts. Storefront isn't necessary.
