Just read on SHiloh forum that the Doe Run lead works is set to close at end of 2013. Appears that EPA has had a hand it this. Several years ago, a group lead buy was put together. Might be a good idea to consider doing a Group Buy again. Any thoughts . JD

I'd be interest in seeing the details. Price, where the lead would be delivered and where to pick up my order, size of the ingots etc.

Thanks

The time that we did a group buy , Dave Baldwin of WBR headed it up. We got commitments w/ funds for a group buy. If I remember correctly , we ended up ordering over 40,000 lbs . Was shipped from Doe run - delivered to near the Fort. Reason for bring this up is that we need lead to keep . Fred Herlinger may have some thoughts on what could be happening in the future. I have been buying 20-1 lead from Roto Metals in CA . Quick check of their website for price has pure lead at more than $ 2.00 per lbs. Hopefully , there are other sources than Doe run. Maybe Fred Herlinger could let us know what this may mean for the N-SSA shooters. JD

A couple of comments from someone who was involved in that purchase...

The total amount was about 20 tons - 45,000 lbs, IIRC. 55-lb ingots. The Skirmisher who put it together said that if he did another buy, the minimum would be 1 ton per buyer. Less than that is too much trouble to track.

Doing some digging, it looks like we're talking about $0.85/lb at the smelter. I'd expect to pay about $1/lb delivered in bulk.

I will still be able to get virgin ingot bars. My supplier gets his lead from a different source but it still pure. Given enough notice I can bring it to the Fort at most of the skirmishes. The price does change with the market.

And before anyone starts whining about the price, I'll point out that a bulk buy is in many tons, not pounds. And I'm not sure what transport (a dedicated tractor-trailer) would run. Fred isn't ripping anyone off.

If we're dealing with a full trailer load from STL to Winchester, I can help with transportation cost. If there's enough interest to merit a giant haul(40K-45k lbs,) I'll check with my company's overlords. We've got to pay our driver, fuel and so forth, but I can beat the market with string pulling and begging. Should be easy to set something up, especially if we plan it way in advance. Let me know!

And by string pulling, begging, and planning in advance, what I mean is that we can find a good back haul for our driver-- say, drop at the Fort and send him on to Norfolk or Richmond to do his regular run, then back to the midwest. Imports from europe generally make that an easy run to fill. The efficacy of it would depend on the current price of lead + fuel cost. Downside is that my company generally doesn't do flatbed, so the unload would either have to be on a dock near the fort, hand-unload or front-end-loader and pallet-jack-assisted unloading. ,,,, how big are these ingots, anyway? Just thinkin' ahead. Wouldn't surprise me if we have a member with a tractor and a flat bed who'll run it at cost. The N-SSA is the weirdest collection of professionals, in all vocations, you'd ever hope to know. Anyway, if we need paid lead transportation, please give me a shout. I'll be glad to haggle for a good cause.

Cheers,

The ingots from the last run were about 55 lbs each.
I actually weighted mine and they ran 63 to 67 and were racked in loads about waist high. The fellow coordinating had a fork lift tractor and we took a whole skid and put 1600 lbs in my 2500 chevy truck. Truck was well loaded it had overload springs and air shocks pumped to 125 lbs
Was a interesting ride back to NC that pm.

the 17th did a tractor trailer buy from doe run when it was super cheap. it was a long time ago. most of us took the ingots off the skid and loaded them up close to the cab which put more weight on the front wheels. it wouldnt hurt to place a few boards across the width of the body to spread the weight. i hauled 1.5 tons in my 3/4 suburban with no problem but i had the weight as close to the front as i could get it. on the trip home i knew it was a heavy load but it handled just fine.
