Have completed the rebuild of a badly deteriorated Musket. It is non fireable as the barrel is too badly pitted to be safe.It is all original except the nipple and sear spring that I replaced during the rebuild
Was wondering how you chase the history of one?
Only data I have available to me now is it came out of Wisconsin about 90 years ago.
There are no serial numbers on it and the only markings are a G and a 5 on the bottom of the barrel and breech plug.
Need ideas as to where to look. Any help appreciated!

Presuming the lock is original to the gun, the maker's name should be on it. Typically, it was Springfield. Of course, age and rust may have obliterated it from clear view, but it and the date of manufacture will be on the lock.

The '42 smoothbore also contained the barrel date on the tang. If the barrel is as bad as you say, it will most likely be totally illegible, but you can look.

The guns did not contain serial numbers.
