My wife and I are taking a trip to the Asheville, NC area to check it out as a possible place to retire. One requirement is range in the area where I can shoot my muzzleloaders and BPCRs. Doesn't matter if it's public or private. I'm not a handgunner so the facility need not have practical shooting or self defense set ups. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Duane.

Duane,

Contact the 1st North Carolina Buncombe Rifles (http://www.n-ssa.net/CAROLINA/CRDirectory.html). They're located in Asheville.

Then check out the other web site pages regarding the Carolina Region: We shoot in Statesville NC.

Then, forget about Asheville and come on down to SC. Much better (speaking as a NJ escapee myself).

My Dad lived down there for a while and he shot at the Asheville Rifle and Pistol club outside of town next to the French Broad River on Route 191. It is a private club, with a nice facility that, if i remember correctly, will allow shooting up to 200 yards.

I have shot (several years ago) at the Asheville Club Range. It does indeed have a 200 yard rifle range as well as a 50 yard conventional pistol range. Due to the encroachment of homes around the range, some of their activities have been somewhat curtailed of late, and anyone shooting there must be under the supervision of one of the club's designated Range Safety Officers. It's not a perfect situation, but it's apparently the only game in town. If you need help getting in touch with members to get a look around, drop me a PM.

There used to be a great skirmish there until around '90, the French Broad. They ended the thing I believe because of friction with the local gun club I believe. Two things stick in my mind. I told my son, about 12 at the time, and his friend, not to fall in the river while fishing. About a half-hour later I checked on them and they were both standing in the MIDDLE of the river, about a hundred yards from shore. The French Broad is about a mile wide and a foot deep.
Another memory was of the giant snake a snake handling skirmisher plucked from the campground. He said it was a "adder," a European term, which means contact with said snake usually adds funeral expenses to the household budget.

Hey Duane!

Once y'all get down here to the Carolina region, you need to sign up with Palmetto Sharpshooters! At the very least, you can pick-up with us anytime you need a place to shoot on the line.

Drop me a line of ask for me at any of the Statesville skirmishes.

-Mik

BTW: We're the ONLY Carolina team with a dry campsite (on the hill)...
