Broke the mainspring on my 1861 Springfield. It broke right at the curve. The metal almost looks like pot metal with a super thin hardened outer layer. Bought a new one from S & S and as soon as I compressed the new spring to put it in the lock it too broke right at the same place. S & S is going to replace it. Is this a problem with the Armi-Sport mainsprings and does another company make a less brittle mainspring that will fit the Armi-Sport? Don't know how I could have over compressed spring when putting into lock as when tumbler is at full cock position the spring is almost compressed fully.

Mike,

I can't answer your question about the quality of ArmiSport mainsprings, but Charlie Hahn posted about 2 months ago, that he is going to have forged mainsprings for original & repro Springfields at the Spring National.

Here is the direct link to his post.
