I shoot a .54 Wilkinson bullet out of mine, with 43 grains of GOEX FFFg. My barrel is relined. Your results may vary, but I'm betting that will be close for you.

Hi Gary,
Any reason you chose to stick with the Wilkinson bullet, instead of one of the .54 caliber Minie's or semi-wadcutters that are available?

The bullet is very accurate, and I bought a six-cavity mold when they were available. A couple hours after I turn the lead pot on, I'm looking at a pile of 300-400 bullets. I shoot two relined originals that have different twists and groove depth, and the same load works well in both. I have another original, and am building a Lorenz from a kit, and I think that bullet is going to shoot just fine in all of them.

Brian,

Sorry, but I got to ask,

Is this Lorenz you just got "your hands on"... an original Lorenz?

This may make a difference in how folks may reply to your query.
Just a thought,

Gary,
Do you lube your Wilky bullet? I've read that you're not supposed to lube the big groove around it because that interferes with expansion of the bullet. What's your experience?

Is it original? What size is the bore?

I put lube in my grooves, but never more than half full. You need to leave room for compression, so you can't fill it up completely.

Call me psychic, but I feel the next one coming.... I use a mixture of bees wax and bear grease for lube. MCM lube was okay, but bear grease is slicker.

Mine is an 1859 original, that I had relined as a .577 cal.
I shoot a sized .576 RCBS, with 42 grains of Goex FFFL, at 50 yards. Bump it up to 51 grains for 100 yards.
Triple dip the bullets in "Lem's Lube". Nothing in the cavity.
Good luck.

Brian,

I also shoot a Lorenz Jager. Here is a short video about my rifle:
