Hi all,
I will be aquiring a Navy Arms 1863 Contract rifle soon and was wondering about the sights. If I install a higher front sight such as S and S Firearms list in their catalogue and set it up for 50 yards, what happens for a 100 yard zero? Do the blank "L' rear they sell allow for 50 and 100 yard zero (I wish to use the U notch rear).

Thanks,
Damon in Australia

Damon, First get the L bland that you intend to use and file a notch in the shorter leg of the leaf. Sight in at 50 yards, making sure that you have a load that gives you a good group. then flip the sight to the longer leaf & sight at 100 yds leaf in using a file to shorten the leaf as needed. The process sounds simpler than it really is but it just takes persistence. Hope this helps.

Just remember. don't go messin' with the sights 'til you find that magic load that makes the tightest groups!

If I install a taller front sight with a 50 yard zero with the stock rear sight, will the second 300 yard leaf be too high for 100 yards?

Probably, but try it. If so, you can always just file it down.
