I have a Richmond (2 bander) from James River Armory and a team mate has a Springfield (2 bander) from Chattaohicia (wrong spelling) Arms. Both have Hoyt barrels and I was wondering if anyone knew what rate of twist these barrels may have - 1:48 or 1:72. Also what types of bullets work the best for these types of muskets?
Thanks

A call to Bobby Hoyt would probably give you the exact answer. With that having been said, if I were to give it a best guess, I'd say most likely a 1x60 twist. That seems to be Bobby's current favorite for quite a few years now.

I would suggest that while you have Mr. Hoyt on the telephone, ask him as to which bullet he would recommend for your guns. I am sure he gets a lot of feedback from his customers.

When a friend had the barrel of his Smith carbine relined, Bob asked that he bring the bullet he was going to use with the barrel so he could ensure the rate of twist and number of lands and grooves was correct for the barrel and bullet. BTW, once the barrel was fitted to the carbine and a load was established it produced really awesome groups.

He did my Richmond 1/48 2 years ago. I wasn't sure what twist would be right for that short barrel so I left it up to him. He said he based that on target distances at skirmishes, the target loads commonly used and requests from "the boys".
