The two methods I've heard of are compressed Cream of Wheat and floral foam (a very light styrofoam). I tried the Cream of Wheat once, it worked fine.

I use Lucky Charms myself and you get little toasted marshmallows as a side benefit.

I think that the last thing you would want to shoot out of your gun would be something containing sugar. If you've ever made candy, you know that when sugar gets burnt it can form a hard, insoluble, carbonized residue. Stick to cream of wheat; it gets scorched, but doesn't really burn, nor leave any significant residue.
