I came across what I believe is an original Enfield bayonet. It appears to have markings that are typical such as crowns, scepters, WD etc. The blade length is 21 1/4 inches. The problem is I have an original Enfield 1863 and the hole in the bayonet is too small for the barrel of the rifle. It appear to be off by about .075. Anyone have any idea as to what it is. I can take pictures if needed but still can not figure on how to post so would have to e-mail.

How about a Martini? No, not the drink!

Thanks, you are right it is a drink and it also is a type 2 Martini bayonet. As I have no Martini, drink or rifle, and do not desire one so I will return this bayonet to the person I got it from. Too bad as it is in good shape and complete with scabbard

Thanks again

Des.....the bayonets were hand fitted to each rifle. They are not allways
interchangeable from on rifle to the next.
I had to enlarge the slot in my bayonet with a dremmel so it wold fit my
muskatoon......sounds like you have to do the same...
Take yer time with the dremmel....and keep trying it on the rifle...and then grind a bit more till it fits!

The blade length of a P-53 Enfield rifled musket is appoximately 17.25 inches. What you have is not for that rifle.

Des, What you have sounds like a pattern 56 Enfield bayonet to me . It was longer and the barrel was the size of a 3 band Springfield Rifle Musket
