Glass Bedding ? For Southron

I am preparing to glass bed my musket, and had a question. When glass bedding, do you apply the bedding material to just before the nose cap or over it? Thanks for the info in advance.

Generally what I will do is to remove the nose cap and see how much wood on the very end of the stock tip supports the nose cap when it is on.

OF there isn't all that much wood, before I start bedding the rest of the stock channel, I will remove the nose cap, put a dab of glass bedding in it, and then re-install the nose cap. Of course, any excess bedding will be squeezed out. I wipe that off and then begin the regular glass bedding job.

What this does is to strengthen the tip of the stock and secure the nose cap to the stock.

When I glass the stock channel, I run the bedding all the way to the front of the stock channel.

Of course, you will end up with the glass bedding covering the head of the screw that holds the nose cap on. No big deal as the nose cap is supposed to be permanently attached to the stock.

If you ever want to take the nose cap off, just use a Dremel Tool to mill your way down to the screw head. Heat the nose cap to 300 Degrees F and the glass bedding will release the nose cap (if the screw is removed)

Well I finally finished the bedding job on the Colt 2 band w/Hoyt barrel. I followed Southron's directions, and it came out great. Now all I have to do is stain and finish. Next will be the Miroku 1863 kit I picked up from Dixie. BTW I tried Devcon steel compound. It seems to work. Thanks Southron. I'll post a pic or two of the Colt when it complete.
