I have a Springfield model 1816, dated 1818 that was converted to percusion via the "Belgian method" typical of so many. The thing about this musket that is different is the hammer, it's kinda crude compared to two other 1816's I have. The nose of the hammer angles in slightly, but noticeably, and the checkering on the spur is crude, as if done with a file. I have a copy of Murphy and Madaus fine book, but will admit I have not read it from cover to cover, although I have read several chapters dealing with conversions. My obvious question, are there any known Confederate muskets that used the Belgian conversion, or , is it possible only the hammer MAY be of southern manufacture?
I can e-mail pics if anyone is interested in taking a look.
