not sure where to post this.........

i am teaching a class on the 1862 Shenandoah Valley campaign and my students will be doing some analysis of the campaigns.

in that regard i'm looking for some general, 'gross' data on marching.

i understand that regiments usually marched 4 abreast. given that,

1. how long would a regimental [app 700 men] column be?

2. how many miles would such a unit, in good, moderate weather cover in an hour? 8 hours?

i know these are VERY GENERALIZED notional numbers, but i need something for the students to work with.

any help would be much appreciated.

Ken,

Off the top of my head.

Length of column would be 2100 to 2500 feet. Speed 2 to 2.5 miles an hours.

When I get home I will cite some references for you.

And thanks for your leadership in getting the VT contingent together for our demo match in October of 2012. Its going to be a great ting to watch !!

Ken,

Here is a link to an interesting magazine format book I've had for years. He has tables of such things as to size and speed of several types of units along with some other interesting stuff. The line drawings are well done too. May be of some use to you. Cheap too!
