One modification that the N-SSA allows is for a musket's front sight to be dovetailed as long as the base of the new sight is more or less identical to the base of the original and the new sight is soldered in the dovetail.
I recently ordered a dovetail cutter from the Gunsmith supply firm of Brownells.
The dovetail cutter came with some rather EMPHATIC INSTRUCTIONS:
"Under no circumstances attempt to use this dovetail cutter on a hand drill-
Use ONLY on a Milling Machine!"
You have got to wonder why Brownell's would include those instructions along with their dovetail cutters. Can you imagine what horrors redneck gunsmiths created trying to use those dovetail cutters in HAND DRILLS!
