How can you tell whether you have a Brake or a Doyle Richmond carbine? This one has N. J on the barrel. Rick

Hello Rick -

You can't tell one from the other. Both builders are quite accomplished and neither one marks their Richmond Carbines. The "N.J" on tyhe barrel means that the barrel came off a musket that had been in the possession of the State of New Jersey at one time.
