I have been shooting the Hodgdon bullet in my 3 band Springfield which has a Whitacre barrel with pretty good luck at 50 yards. At 100 yards, okay not great. I want to try some other bullets. Has anyone had great success using other bullet(s) with a Whitacre barrel at 100 yards? Any suggestions for bullets/load appreciated.

Try the Lyman 575213 new style at about 515 grains with about 45 grains of 2F. Adjust the load up or down to test accuracy at 100 yds.

Hello Chuck:

I've got a 3-band M1855 Springfield with a Whitacre barrel. It's got a .578" bore that I'd been shooting the Hodgdon Skirmisher in. I wasn't really happy with that bullet either especially out to 100 yds. I dug out an old Rapine 580455 (International) mold and tried it. Sized to .577" it seems to shoot better for me with 45 grs 3F Goex than what I was getting with the Skirmisher bullet.

Work up the best group at a 100 you'll get the best windage and the group at 50 will be even better. Hodgden wadcutters shoot better with less powder, like 36 to 40 grains of 3f.

I shoot a Hodgdon .580 bullet sized to .577 out of an 1863 Springfield 2 band Whiteacre barrel with 45grs of FFF. I have shot a 2.12 in group at 100 yards with this combination.

Thanks for all the good info. Ya'll have given me lots of homework. Time to hit the range.

Good to hear from you P.A. We missed you at Brierfield last weekend, but it was almost 100 degrees. Drank a half gallon of gatoraide every day and still stayed hot and thirsty.

I am shooting a Lyman, 575213, new style, 510 grain bullet sized to .575 in my Whitacre barrel. I am using 38 grains of 3f GOEX. I am also lubing inside and outside with MCM. No cleaning necessary but I do wipe with one wet and one dry patch between relays. Wetting liquid is Black Solve.
