Most everyone's seen the photos of the French field guns captured from the Confederates in the photo in the Miller series. Those were most likely 8 pounders converted to 12-pounder (or 12cm if done in France before they were sold.) France had been producing a 12 cm mountain howitzer since 1828, and the US M1835 was based on it except for the trunnion location. The bore on the M1828 was a bit larger than the US model, but I suppose they could have been used by putting the shells in canvas bags similar to what was done with the oversize Austrian howitzers. Did the Confederates buy any French mountain howitzers M1828, and if so, did those howitzers see action? If used were any documented as having been captured by the Union?
