The current market price for foundry lead is $1.15 PER POUND!

It wasn't all that long ago (a few years ago) that lead was going for 18 Cents Per Pound!

Southron, Sr.,

I drive for a scrap metal salvage yard, and this past tuesday while delivering a load of scrap metal to a local steel mill, I talked very breifly with the mill's scale operator who is also an avid shooter, about an article he just recently read, that was in I believe, Field & Stream magazine. The article he said, stated how lead in the possible near future, is going to be harder to get because of massive battery manufacturing in China, driving the price of the commodity through the roof. Maybe someone else on the BB read the same, or equivalent article, and can put more light on the subject.

Perhaps we should guard our own resource and try to insure the backstop isn't being mined for sale outside of our membership.

Just a thought.

In April 2008 the price was $1.75. Prices have come down not gone up.

In 2007 my wife and I vacationed in Italy. During our visit, they caught someone stealing lead shingles from a church roof. The reporter stated there had been over one hundred similar reports in the past year.

You can watch the market here: http://www.kitcometals.com/

Just bought 150LBS of pure lead, for $1.38/lb. Thats cut up into 5lb squares, to fit in my pot.
Last year I paid $1.59/lb.

Two years ago it was over $2 per lb. Very little mining going on because of recycling.

According to Kitco Metals the highest price in the last 5 years was in October 2007 when the price was 1.75

I suspect that $2. was retail price. KITCO is foundry/recycle lot price.

That was the retail price. I check KITCO often and if the price goes below a buck a pound I'd be surprised.

On our way to the Nationals from Georgia, we come close to Wytheville, Virginia. What is so unique about Wytheville? During the Revolutionary War the lead mines at Wytheville supplied the lion's share of lead to George Washington's Army. American Independence was literally won with Wytheville lead that was cast into musket and rifle balls!

During the Civil War, the lead mines at Wytheville supplied the Confederacy with lead. I was in Wytheville a year or so ago and according to the locals I talked to, the lead mines are long closed down. Maybe it is time to reopen them!

Look at KITCO today. Lead close at 1.09 a pound. Something new everyday.
