FINE .44 CALIBER BALL & WILLIAMS
MILITARY CARBINE CONVERTED TO CENTER FIRE

During 1862 and 1863, Ball & Williams produced approximately 4,000 military carbines for the state of Kentucky. The Kentucky carbines were issued to the 6th, 8th,11th, 13th, and 16th Kentucky cavalry regiments, and the 30th, 37th, 45th and 52nd Kentucky Mounted Infantry. Most of these carbines saw service when these units were pursuing Confederate General John Hunt Morgan during his Ohio raid in July, 1863, were participating during Sherman's Atlanta Campaign, or were chasing Confederate guerrillas within Kentucky. Another 500 of these carbines were sold to the state of New York. These carbines were used to rearm local militia units following the New York City draft riots of July, 1863. [From Dutcher, Ballard the Great Single Shot Rifle, pp 22-25]. The carbine was manufactured in a standard .44 rim fire caliber. It featured a 22 1/8 inch barrel, a one piece breach block (with trigger assembly), a casehardened hammer, and oil finished forearm and stock.

This carbine is a particularly nice example. Metal surfaces feature natural patina, with legible markings. Wood is solid with good fit to metal. Mechanics operate extremely well, with smooth trigger action, and good closure of breach. Bore has strong lands and grooves, and limited pitting. Surfaces have not been cleaned and have natural patina. The carbine has standard swivels front and back, and correct original rear and front sight. The carbine has been converted to center fire and comes with 43 pieces of heavy gauge perfectly fitting .44 Ballard brass, machined by Rocky Mountain Cartridges, LLC. NSSA SAC carded.
Markings appearing on the carbine are as follows:
Barrel: Top-"Ball & Williams Worcester, Mass"
Right side-"Ballards Patent",Left side-Merwin & Bray Agt's"
Receiver: Top rear of barrel"6505",Top of receiver"6505"
Underneath barrel just forward of extractor spring post- "86"
Left of breach block by hammer-"505" and “73”

Stock: Stacking number "17" near butt

Shoot it or put it in the back of the toy chest as an investment, or do both.

Reasonably priced at $1,400
