Our Reenacting group has really grown in the off season and we need to purchase 2 band rifles ,like the Zouave or Smith Carbines for mounted/dismounted cavalry.

We are also looking for used tents and uniforms and gear. Shoot me a message if you got stuff.

You should not encourage the use of Zouave rifles as they were never used during the American Civil War. The use of musketoons and other carbines should be encouraged.

If My memory surve me right. I think I read some were that the troops guarding Washington DC were issued Zouaves. Maybe someone with more expertise can jump on this one.

Terry, the reason why I put Zouave in there is to give an example. You would be surprised how many people have no clue when you write musketoon or 2 band rifle. I posted that before in a forum and all i got was responses for 3 band Enfield or Springfield rifles.

Most National Parks will also look more favorably on Zouave's over Hawkins rifles and yes there were some used in ACW but the supply was limited.

I don't know about Hawkins in the war but I am sure that no Zouaves were issued. The only reason that the N-SSA allows them is that way back when they were first starting up a Zouave was one of the few reproductions available and they are now grandfathered in for shooting.

I don't know about them never being "issued" but I've sen over the years where some did go to guards and I have an article somewhere I need to find where one was dug out of the trenches in Vicksburg I think it was.

The government offered Remington a contract for 10,000 Harpers Ferry type 1855 rifles on July 30, 1861 on August 6, 1861 they accepted the contract. Remington started shipping deliveries of the rifle on June 13, 1863 and by November 13, 1863 they already delivered 7,000 rifles.

I have no knowledge of the Zouave rifle being used during the cw but wasn't the Zouave rifle a improved version of the 1855 Harpers Ferry rifle? As far as I know the 1855 rifle was only made by Harpers Ferry, and Springfield. On the delivery dates that Remington supplied the government in my earlier post they also shipped sword bayonets with scabbards for $5 each. I was not aware that the Harpers Ferry rifle used a sword bayonet.
