ArmiSport M-1842 Front Sight Correction Decision
N-SSA Small Arms Committee
01-09-2011

The question, as brought to the Small Arms Committee, was in regards to the misaligned iron front sight found on the N-SSA approved ArmiSport Model 1842 smoothbore musket. This error in manufacturing has caused our competitors no small amount of grief in attempting to compete with this arm.

The Small Arms Committee has had a very thorough discussion of this topic. It was decided that any N-SSA competitor who is using an ArmiSport Model 1842 smoothbore musket with the as-issued factory misaligned iron front sight be allowed to correct the problem by removing it and then replace it with a replica of an original Model 1842 brass blade front sight. The replacement is to be a faithful copy of an original as issued Model 1842 smoothbore musket front sight.

The replacement brass front sight blade is to be as follows:

Length – Equal to the front strap of the front barrel band it is mounted on.

Width – The base of the brass blade front sight is to be 0.200” wide. The sight base is an ellipse
with the widest point being in the middle of the base.

Height – The height of the brass blade is to be 0.125”, not including the thickness of the barrel
band.

Location – The new replacement brass blade front sight is to be centered on top of the front
strap of the front barrel band.

This correction is to allow the competitor to correct the front sight to an as intended original configuration. This is not meant to allow the competitor to make minor “sight adjustments” by mounting the new front sight off center in either direction. When the arm is held to the shoulder and sighted down the barrel, the front sight will be centered in the line of sight.

All ArmiSport Model 1842 smoothbore muskets so modified are required to be submitted to the Small Arms Committee to have the modification verified that it is done correctly. The SAC Inspector will fill out the proper paperwork, to include the serial number of the arm, and issue a Temporary Conditional Approval if necessary. They will then submit the paperwork to the Chairman who will in turn review it and issue a permanent SAC Individual Approval Card to the competitor.

N.B. – The Smoothbore Musket Matches are the most restrictive in the N-SSA. The match is intended to showcase arms being fired competitively in an as issued configuration. Please remember that your Small Arms Committee is governed by the N-SSA’s Rules as set up and approved by your Board of Directors.
