Greetings to all:

I have been asked to assist in a headstone dedication for a Confederate soldier by being on the rifle team. I was told not to worry about the blanks, they will be provided. Which got my curiousity up. What is a reasonable amount of BP to make a "good" bang? The re-enacting community will state that amount is far more than what we use with live rounds. Your thoughts please.

60-70 grains of 3F

Many re-enactment organizers limit loads to 90 grains of FFFg black powder for blanks. I always found that 100 grains of FFFg gives a nice "KER-BOOM." This, of course, involves NOT using a wad but simply pouring the powder down the barrel and seating it in the breech by bumping the butt plate of the musket on the ground.

We always used 60 grains of fffg. Shooting blanks leaves a lot of fouling in the barrel. Start the cleaning process by pouring hot water down the barrel to soften the fouling . If a patch is run down before doing this there is a good chance it will get stuck.
