Hello, I am wanting to replace the peep sight on my H&V Richmond Carbine with an authentic one. I can't really figure out how to get the current 1855 style base off the Hoyt barrel as there is no screw in the screw hole.Staked,Soldered??? Can anyone recommend a source for a new sight that will also install it?? Thanks...Mike McSpadden

Don't know for sure but if there is no screw, it's probably soldered on.

HUH? If you have a M1855 base, then all you have to do is replace the leaf. You can do that by taking out that little screw that the sight leaves pivot on. Replacement sight leafs are available from Dixie Gun Works, Lodgewood, etc.

Yes , that would have been the best idea if someone hadn't drilled the hole bigger to accept the screw and leaves from a Zoave rear sight that,by the way, doesnt't fit correct and is too loose in the base. So,I am stuck with replacing the whole sight now and want to be as authentic as possible...Thanks...Mike

Look around the edges of the base of your sight. Do you spot a sliver of "silvery" metal between the sight base and the barrel? My GUESS is that the sight is soldered on. If it were "staked" on you could see the stake dimples. Of course, there is always the chance that the sight is glued on using some sort of "Super Glue."

Your safest bet is to run the gun to a professional gunsmith and let him remove the sight. He might also have to re-tap the sight screw hole if solder has flowed into it.

I hope you mean the Model 1858 Rifle Musket 3 leaf rear sight, as opposed to the Model 1855 Harper's Ferry Rifle 3 leaf rear sight....

Mike,

The Model 1858 Rifle Musket rear sight base is the same length as the standard Model 1861/63 Rifle Musket rear sight base. It just doesn't have the high ears that protect the 1st leaf.

The Harper's Ferry Model 1855 Rifle rear sight has a shorter base, much like a "Zouave" rear sight base. You do not want this one.
