(SOLD)Better than attic condition Colt 1861 Special Model (1863 dated) with “N.J” surcharge on barrel and stock flat. Clean bore, crisp rifling, and sharp bore at muzzle; not cut-back or relined. Minor to moderately but uniform pitting around the breech area and scattered along the barrel; barrel bands, trigger-guard, and butt-plate are more heavily pitted likely from both CW period usage and neglect (had been stored in attic for several years in Charleston, SC). Good wood, smooth stock, with a small stress crack (repairable) on flat but quite good condition for its 148 years. Has high “skirmish” front sight, but no evident of ever having had any inspector's cartouches applied to stock flat since it was a New Jersey contract musket, though it could be some Confederate soldier’s Spotsylvania war trophy. No soldier graffiti or personalization marks. NRA good condition; just very dark patina with dark walnut stock. Priced to sell at $1,050 OBO plus postage. Can deliver to the fort at the Nationals.

It would be my guess that it didnt have any inspectors cart. because it was never approved by the federal government. eithor for the reason of overflow or reasons unknown. I had one very similar to it. and was in near perfect condition and couldnt figure out why. The N.J. stamp obviously stands for NJ that could have purchase this during war time for use of militia etc. hope that helps
