So, I've been shooting musket for a bit, and enjoying it thoroughly. But, being fascinated by all sorts of firearms, I have a Long Land Pattern Musket (Brown Bess) as well. I'm told it's competition legal, but I want to make sure of it before I have it mailed down to my region. (I'm home on leave in NY at the moment, and shoot in the Carolinas.) Further, if it IS legal, how does the N/SSA handle priming a flintlock? Honestly, if I'm shooting smoothbore, I'm doing it for style! I'd be all about using a powder horn, but I wasn't sure if one would be legal.

Anyway, in case anyone is unsure, this is the particular firearm I'm referring to: http://www.middlesexvillagetrading.com/M1BB.shtml

Section 25.2.1 Loading flintlocks.

As for being legal, you better check with John Holland, chair of the SAC. It strikes me that the later short land pattern "Bess" has been used, with approval of the SAC, but I just don't know bout the Long land patttern.

Johns email is: John Holland <jh44ny@verizon.net>

Your priming charge must be a part of the main charge. No powder horns or other containers of loose powder are allowed. Also you may not use a cloth "patch" with your ball. You can wrap in "tin" foil but no cloth patches allowed. There are specific rules and procedures in the skirmish regulations that cover the loading and firing and clearing of the flint lock arms.
You can access them on line at the main web page.

I don't think it is legal as that gun is not approved. It is made in India and has not been submitted for approval. The SAC will have to approve it before you can shoot it and they may not. There has been some question about the safety of the India made guns.
