Does anyone out there know the bore size of the original Fayetteville 1863 Type lll ? Were they .577 or .580 or both? I realize that as they used up the Harpers Ferry barrels they must have been .580 but by 1863 I'd like to know if they made some in .577.

My 1864 dated Fayetteville is .577", which frankly surprised me. I don't know if that is typical.

What seems to be the case is that Confederate manufactured barrels were typically .577 and the barrels captured early in the war from Harpers Ferry were .580 and were utilized by Fayetteville until they were used up. Captured Union arms that were cut to carbine or short rifle length remained in their original .580 caliber. So It would be most likely that your 1864 Fayetteville would end up being in .577.
