I've been searching through threads here and other sites for the twist rate and rifling depth for original Smith Carbines. Anyone have this info? I know the Pietta repros are either 1:60 or 1:66 with a depth of .007. Just wondering how that compares to the originals. Many thanks.

There is a book written by Michael Santarelli, a member of our SAC called "The Smith Carbine in the Civil War".

According to this source (Appendix A, pp. 155-6), rifling on the Smith was 1:62" / Right twist / Three lands and grooves / Minimum land width range - 0.242" to 0.250" / Maximum land width range - 0.243" to 0.255" / Minimum groove width range - 0.252" - .274" / Maximum groove width range - 0.275".

Hope this helps.

Hello, Tim:
Perhaps a Search here will surface slightly different bore diameters for original Smiths.
Bruce Cobb shared that, if it matters. Smiles.
