I recently picked an old (2 digit serial number) Navy Arms Henry in .44-40. I have loaded blackpower rounds for an original 1873 Winchester for many years, but find that they do not shoot well in this replica.

Does anyone have experience with the Navy Arms Henry in this caliber? If so, do you have recommendations on the bullet and powder charge?

Thanks-

My teammate has the navy arms Uberti 44-40. A 240 gr bullet will 1 deep lube ring, sized to .429 with 20-25 gr 3f and shoots one ragged hole at point of aim.

An original 44-40 bore could have lots of issues affecting accuracy that a relatively new repro wouldn't.

I gold medaled 3 times in one day (50/100/agg) with my replica iron framed Henry shooting a 205gr Lyman 42798 (now 427098, I think) over 30 grains of Goex 3f.

I might try firelapping the bore to clean things up.

My Navy Arms/Uberti Henry shoots well with a 230-grain Lyman gas check bullet (without the gas check) sized .429 and lubed with SPG on top of 24 grains FFFg Goex (currently using 24 grains 1.5 Fg Swiss) and an appropriate amount of cream of wheat to fill the case. The standard 200-grain .44-40 bullet may work well in your M1873 Winchester but may be too small in diameter (.427) to work well in the repro Henrys. You may need to slug your bore to determine the optimum bullet diameter for your Henry.

I think the repros have .429 bores, originals are said to be more lik .427, or so I read. That may explain the difference.
