I'm considering relining a rusty Thompson Center blackpowder barrel to .45 caliber for general plinking. Did RCBS make a Hodgdon .45 caliber mold? If not any info on another bullet mold would be appreciated. Or am I better off with a patched round ball? Thanks to all!

You might want to speak to Bob Hoyt. Depending on the current bore size he may be able to rifle the barrel to .50 or 54 caliber, rather then reline to to .45. There is a .54 Hogdon, I am not sure about a .50 or a .45. Please post what you finally end up doing.

Not sure if it will help, I use a standard Lee .54 cal minie (that they make for the Mississippi) with 70 grains of 2F. I shoot this out of a base line Pedersoli flintlock rifle. It holds a 1 inch group at 50yds for deer hunting. I can get about 20 rounds off before I have to brush the barrel out.

I have target guns/calibers now. I just want a small caliber plinker to play with. Cheaper on lead and powder too! Thanks!

Me too; I've been threatening to get a .45 small bore to kill feral tomato cans.
More so than anything else thinking about .445 bore using a .444 push through sizer.

Try the gun with the rusty barrel with a .440 or .445 round ball and patch. I believe it will do fine for plinking. I have an old rusty barrel flint lock (really pitted) and shoots a 2 - 3 inch group at 25 yards with a round ball and patch. Definitely not a target gun, but fun to play with mistreating it does not seem to affect it.

I bought a Numrich Minute Man flintlock 45 caliber in 1973. I shoot 433 round ball with a patch and 60 grains of 2F/3F mixture of Black powder. I have harvested up to seven deer with the firearm up to 50 yards. As with anything else, it is location, location, location or in this case placement, placement, placement.

Now that the frizzen is sparking again. The Fall and post flintlock season hopefully will be interesting.
