View Full Version : Case Hardening
Are hammers on ACW muskets generally case hardened? Bought some parts from the Rifle Shoppe that are, of course, unfinished. Thanks

Depends very much on the musket. Some were armory bright, so an unfinished part would be okay for matching originals (like an 1861 Springfield). Some were color case hardened, and the finish wore off to a silvery-gray (Like a majority of 1863/4 Springfields). Some were case hardened, and the finish on most examples remain (Like an 1863 Remington "Zouave".)
Check out photos of original arm of the type you are making parts, they will clue you in on the next step!
