I have an untouched Pietta Cavalry Model Smith Carbine, that, I would like to see get a good home. Comes with two molds, one from Navy Arms, the other a cherried Dixie Hair Straightener. Fired less than 50 times, in excellent condition, manufactured December 1992. This is a great candidate for upgrading.

Just so no one labels me a blue belly carpet bagger, this is an early Smith, one of the one's that Navy Arms had a problem of the rifling being front to back. So, its going to be in need of relining if you're a lookin to compete with it. I never got around to it.

I would like to get $650, but will consider a trade for a 1865 3 band Sharps. Offers and trades will be considered.

What he is saying is that a batch of the early repro Smith Carbines got through with the barrels rifled in reverse, so the bores are larger at the muzzle than the breech. Therefore, accuracy was greatly diminished.

First let me thank John Holland for clearing that up for me.

While I don't know what it would cost to have it relined. I contacted Pietta, and they contacted Dixie Gun Works, who in turn sent me the following in an email:

Dear Customer:
We can special order this item from our manufacturer. The cost for special ordering would be $345.00 plus shipping. Terms are 50% down (non-refundable) at time of ordering. Delivery would be 60 to 90 days; however this company could take up to 5 months for delivery.

Instead of a new barrel a reline by Bobby Hoyt would give you a target shooting quality bore that would fix this problem. I can't quote a price
but it would probably be less expensive in time and money. Mr. Hoyt is well known for the quality of his work. He has relined a number of
barrels for me including a reproduction Gallagher that came with rifling inappropriate for accrurate black powder shooting.

Although I cannot quote Bobby Hoyt's current pricing, I'm sure if you rang him up, he could quote you an estimate. But he relined my Navy Arms Smith Carbine in 2002 for $135, and has relined two other musket barrels within the last two years for about $200 each (2008) and another carbine barrel at $185 earlier this year. As for how the reline improved accuracy of my Smith, it went from being a hose pipe to becoming quite fond of the little 1.5" wide x 3.5" long hanging wood strips at 50 yards.
