Which variant of 1841 is this?

I sometimes think about getting back into skirmishing and occasionally look for a rifle. This one is currently on Gunbroker, looks like a skirmishers rifle but no patch box? I'm thinking this one wouldn't pass inspection.

Jim,

According to George Moller, on pages 460 to 466 of Volume III of his American Military Shoulder Arms books, Whitney made several variations of what he calls their Type I Militia rifle. The Type I resembles a Mississippi without a patch box. He states they all had minor variations. None that he shows have the long range sight like the one you reference. My assumption is this one would not be approved in that configuration. I would contact John Holland to verify that or ask if the one you reference could be reconfigured.
