So, I was considering jumping in on the smoothbore pistol competition. What type of smoothbore pistols are out there that would work for N-SSA competitions? I see the Pedersoli Harpers Ferry (percussion) is the only one listed as an approved reproduction.

What types of pistols are being shot? If I were to venture in that direction.......What do you all suggest?

I would really like to obtain/shoot an 1850 Potsdam pistol, not sure if anyone else is thinking the same thing?

Thanks.

Besides the one you mention, I have seen '42 Martial pistols (H.Aston/I.N. Johnson) at national and regional events.

I have the repro Pedersoli Harpers Ferry smoothbore, 2017 production. It's quite accurate.

The percussion conversion Harpers Ferry M1805 pistols are the only reproductions currently available. I shoot an original I.N. Johnson M1842 percussion pistol (dated 1854) which has a shorter barrel than the M1805s. Like most originals, it has a rather heavy trigger pull. To preserve its collector value, I don't want to alter the lock parts in any way. Despite the nasty trigger pull, I do reasonably well with it, but it will probably never win me any medals. Replacement parts are readily available for the repro Harpers Ferrys and the locks can be tuned for a better trigger pull so that seems to be the direction most competitive skirmishers are going.
