WTS Bavarian Muster 1858 (Type I) Schützengewehr Infantry rifle-musket, with flip-up rear sight, graduated to 900 schritt (steps), with 4-groove, 13.9 mm (.547 inch) bore. The lock-plate is unmarked, while the breech, barrel and stock are stamped with serial number. This musket is a rarity in that of some 116,000 made, fewer than 2,800 survived owing to the destruction of the later Type II and III breech-loading rifles by Prussia after Bavaria was defeated in the Austro-Prussian War, 1865-66. NRA good condition with very nice bore; SOLD.

Below is a reference to a book online (published in 1869), nicely illustrated, which as shown in Table VII, Figure 6 illustrates the bore and rifling dimensions with the land-to-land dimension as 0.53 and the groove-to-groove as 0.55, so that 13.9-mm is only in a “nominal” sense that the U.S. .54-caliber elongated ball would fit but requires sizing. Table VIII features the various parts of the Model 1858 infantry rifle, while Table X (Figure 11) features an illustration of the Model 1858 infantry rifle, while Figure 1 (same table) features the Model I Klappenvisir rear sight (like on the musket I have here), while Figure 2 features the shooter’s sight like was fitting to the Model II and III (the models converted to the Linder system, see Table XIII, Figures 1 &2), circa 1865-66, soon afterwards all destroyed by the Prussians.
