Hey there,

I recently purchased a Springfield Model 1863 Type II musket (dated 1864) and realized the ramrod was too short (probably an original artillery ramrod). So I'm in search for an original (willing to trade my original ramrod for a longer original), or a repro that anyone has lying around.

I am also looking to see if anyone has mold supplies for a .58 cal minie ball, and or any information on what I should be on the lookout for.

Best,
Johnny

You need to measure the bore first, to determine what size Minie would fit the best.

consider getting a brass 3 band rod. Better for the bore

John,

I might be listing some molds shortly. Like Gil said, you should measure your bore to make sure you get a mold that is a proper fit. Does anyone on your team have any pin gauges to measure your bore? Or, can they give you a few Minies in different sizes to try?

John, I have welded quite a few shortened rods back to full length. I have a lengthened original '64 rod now, with the correct 12-26 threads. I'll trade for your short original and $20. I'll be in the stat shack at Nationals.

Thank you all for the info!!

Geezmo, regarding the bore, I shot a few minie 576 rounds with some success. The rounds were a nice snug fit when lubed up. I would assume that would be what I?d be searching for regarding molds.

Lou, would you be willing to sell one of your brass rods?

Carolina Reb, thanks! I?m thinking about holding onto the original I have and only trading for a longer original (if that makes sense). I?ll be in touch as we approach nationals though, as I may change my mind by then ;).
