Are there any published photos of early US powder horns that were issued with the 1803, 1814, and 1817 US and Contract Rifles? I am wanting to build one but can't find any photos or research. I have been told that they were similar to the ones the British issued with the Bakers. While Bailey's book on British Military rifles shows two British examples, I am looking for something that is documented for US rifles. Or.... any good period descriptions.

Thanks!

Mike O'Donnell

Book Description: Mike O'Donnell Publications, 2008. Hard Cover. 8.5 x 11 in. Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. There are more than 500 photographs in this highly detailed study of early American military canteens. The various types carried during the Revolution are pictured and described as never before, both tin and wood. The wooden War of 1812 pattern canteens are fully examined as are the tin drum canteens issued to the U.S. Army during the Mexican War. This book contains the most complete chronology of the development of the oblate spheroid canteens beginning in 1848, mass-produced during the Civil War and reissued for the Spanish-American War. All known manufacturers are identified along with the details of their contracts. A separate list of the suppliers and a full index are provided in the back. This will be the standard canteen reference book for the forseeable future. Bookseller Inventory # MOP-2008-0967073170-X2

Yancey,

The book Norm has cited is indeed a very comprehensive book on canteens, but there is nothing on the powder horn information you are looking for. In my opinion you are looking for the Allegheny Arsenal type powder horn. This is the one with the spring loaded lever spout cover and screw base filler plug.

I shouldn't write answers to posts in the morning. I have no idea how I jumped from powder horns to canteens. Thanks for the correction John.

Why should I be offended, I am the one that screwed up. I think I know why I was thinking canteens. I had a discussion about Confederate wood canteens with a friend yesterday and it must have still been on my mind.

Fellow Skirmishers:
If I may suggest a couple of excellent books on Accoutrements;

California. ISBN 1-882824-08-3. This book covers a large number of rifle powder flasks and other rifle accoutrements as well as ones for colt revolvers.

"Gun Tools, Their History and identification" By James B Shaffer, Lee A. Rutledge, and R. Stephen Dorsey, copyright 1992,
printed by Collectors' Library, Eugene, OR 97440. ISBN 0-9631208-0-8. This book covers gun tools from the earliest know tools
to tools that are issued today.
